WILL EISNER & FRANK MILLER's "The Spirit" + The Importance of Perspective
After co-directing with Robert Rodriguez on Sin City, Miller has stated in regard to the adaptation of his graphic novel 300, "This, I hope, will be the last property of mine that isn't directed by me". Samuel L. Jackson is in discussion to star as the villain, the Octopus. The SpiritSin City.
It will be interesting to see how Miller approaches Eisner's original material and how well he can come to terms with directing solo. Whatever one feels about Frank Miller's work or personal beliefs, he's undeniably single-minded in his vision and being no stranger to controversy has been a catalyst of discussion across several forums. which centers on Denny Colt who fakes his own death to fight crime in the gritty urban setting of Central City. The script has been acquired by Lionsgate for American distribution and Miller is set to direct. Odd Lot International(UK) is selling overseas distribution rights in Cannes. will be Miller's debut as a solo director after his co-direction of

DAVID GALLO: Underwater Astonishments
Oceanic explorer and ambassador David Gallo presents some beautiful imagery and fascinating insight into the deep sea in the following pair of talks from the TED series.
Rageh Omaar's ISLAM IN AMERICA: The American Crescent
Rageh Omar's fascinating documentary Islam in America has been put online by Aljazeera. It makes for an apt accompaniment to Colin Powell's recent comments:
"Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America.
"Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion - 'he's a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists'. This is not the way we should be doing it in America."
MAN OF LA MANCHA: The Impossible Dream
The film isn't perfect; it's a musical with some off-kilter, retro Bollywood-style dubbing but this scene works. The performance, the song, the tone, the set... it has taken a permanent place in me since seeing it 25 years ago.
AGAN HARAHAP PHOTOGRAPHIC
Lars Von Trier's ANTICHRIST
Lars Von Trier is one of my favourite directors, I enjoy the horror genre, and the concept of nature (chaos?) being the manifestation of evil is interesting. The shot above of the road and car being swallowed up by the forest is exemplary of the sumptuous, Gothic imagery from Director of photography, Anthony Dod Mantle.
The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Defoe as a grieving couple who take refuge in an isolated cabin after the death of their child.
FRITZ FABERT ART
Fritz Fabert's portfolio, particularly his archaeological collages from derelict buildings, are worth a look.
MARK WEAVER PHOTOGRAPHIC
Mark Weaver's photographic and design work is like an extra sweet tea; have a look.
Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND
The imagery that's been released by USA Today hints at something wondrous, menacing, and true to the original without being overly familiar. Promising. The cast includes Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock, Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts, and newcomer Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley.
FRED BASTIDE
A graduate of the Ecole d'Arts Appliqués de Vevey, and Ecole Supérieure d'Arts Décoratifs de Genève, Fred Bastide has created some of the best cg character pieces I've seen and he's learned the craft in his spare time from his home in Montreux, Switzerland.
The Blackheart Gang - REE TREWEEK
Ree Treweek is part of the trio that is the Blackheart Gang, a talented illustrator "with red hair, freckles and braces; she also has a very short temper, a ticking time bomb of sorts." She has very generously answered my questions and provided lots of unique imagery and insight in what is the first part of the Blackheart
LEE CHANG-DONG's "Secret Sunshine"
South Korean director, Lee Chang-Dong's latest film is a story of faith seen through a young widow, Shin-ae who returns to her late husband's hometown with her young son. She plans to teach piano and after promising beginnings, things take a turn for the worse. Her son is kidnapped and Shin-ae faces a series of tribulations set forth by this turn of events. She must confront fundamental questions of life and faith.
The film has been receiving good reviews and actress Jeon Do-yeon's performance has been highly praised. It sounds reminiscent of Lars Von Trier's work, particularly Breaking the Waves, both in tone and approach.
DAMON ALBARN & JAMIE HEWLETT's Opera "Monkey: Journey to the West"
Directed and adapted for stage by Chen Shi-Zheng with music by Damon Albarn and visual design, animations, and costumes by Jamie Hewlett, it also features 45 Chinese acrobats, Shaolin monks, Chinese vocalists, and the UK Chinese Music Ensemble led by Cheng Yu.
The opera is a co-production between the Manchester International Festival, the Théâtre du Châtelet Paris and the Berlin State Opera and is set to play at all these venues. Follow the links for scheduling and ticketing.
LUCHA LIBRE
The trio continued working together producing the comic, Lucha Libre in collaboration with Jerry Frissen. Alas, it is only in French but you can see some of the rich imagery on the official site or in a feature on Catsuka.
CATFISH HOTEL
This gem was released some years ago. It's chock full of great character design, solid animation, and a fun if light story. From the French trio of Baptiste Gaubert(Gobi), Benoît Boucher(Bill), and Fabien Mense for Studio Tanuki.

Ghibli Museum
The museum is a fine arts museum, but does not take the concept of a usual fine arts museum. With many features that are child-oriented and a sprawling and occasionally mazelike interior, the museum is a playfully created place. Centered around the motto appearing on the museum's website "Let's become lost children together" (迷子になろうよ、いっしょに, Maigo ni narō yo, isshoni), or 'let's lose our way together' as it is translated in the English leaflet. It has no set path or order of viewing. While the museum brochure contains a variety of languages, the signs within the museum are in Japanese only.

Love Hina
Love Hina is a popular 14 volume manga by Ken Akamatsu, published in 1999, which was also turned into an anime series. It is based around a childhood promise that the protaganist, Keitarou Urashima, made to an unidentified girl when he was five years old, that they would attend Tokyo University together and so live happily ever after. The plot revolves around the question of the girl's identity, and whether he will manage to keep the promise.
List of Pixar films
Pixar is a CGI animation production company based in Emeryville, California, United States. The studio has earned numerous awards for their feature films and other work, including twenty-two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, and three Grammys. Pixar is best known for these CGI-animated features created with PhotoRealistic RenderMan, its own implementation of the industry-standard Renderman image-rendering API used to generate high-quality images.
As of 2009, Pixar have released ten CGI films. The company produced its first feature-length film Toy Story in 1995. The film won four Academy Awards and set a benchmark in terms of animation to which other film companies have since aspired. The success of the film led Pixar to release a sequel in 1999, following their second CGI production, A Bug's Life in 1998. Monsters, Inc. was the next project to be released, in 2001, and Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E and Up have since been released. Each film has garnered critical acclaim for the use of CGI, well-developed storylines and film production. Four films, including a third Toy Story, are slated for release between 2010 and 2012
As listed on this chart, award categories in bold are won; otherwise just a nomination was received.

Pixar - The Animation Studios
Pixar started in 1979 as the Graphics Group, a part of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1986. The Walt Disney Company before it was bought by bought Pixar in 2006.
Pixar has made 10 feature films beginning with Toy Story in 1995 and each one has received critical and commercial success. Pixar followed Toy Story with A Bug's Life in 1998, Toy Story 2 in 1999, Monsters, Inc. in 2001, Finding Nemo in 2003 (which is, to date, the most commercially successful Pixar film, grossing over $800 million worldwide), The Incredibles in 2004, Cars in 2006, Ratatouille in 2007, WALL-E in 2008 and Up in 2009 (the first Pixar film presented in Disney Digital 3-D). Pixar's eleventh film, Toy Story 3, is scheduled for release on June 18, 2010.
All six Pixar films released since the inauguration of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2001 have been nominated for the award, with four, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and WALL-E, winning it.
Pixar was founded as the Graphics Group, one third of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm that was launched in 1979 with the hiring of Dr. Ed Catmull from the New York Institute of (NYIT), where he was in charge of the Computer Graphics Lab (CGL). At NYIT, the researchers pioneered many of the CG techniques that are now taken for granted and worked on an experimental film called The Works. When the group moved to Lucasfilm, the team worked on creating the precursor to RenderMan, called Motion Doctor, which allowed traditional cel animators to use computer animation with minimal training. Technology
The team began working on film sequences produced by Lucasfilm or worked collectively with Industrial Light and Magic on special effects. After years of research, and key milestones in films such as the Genesis Effect in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and the Stained Glass Knight in Young Sherlock Holmes, the group, who counted about 45 individuals back then, was purchased in 1986 by Steve Jobs shortly after he left Apple Computer. Jobs paid $5 million to George Lucas and put $5 million as capital into the company. A factor contributing to Lucas' sale was an increase in cash flow difficulties following his 1983 divorce, which coincided with the sudden dropoff in revenues from Star Wars licenses following the release of Return of the Jedi and the disastrous box-office performance of Howard the Duck. The newly independent company was headed by Dr. Edwin Catmull, President, and Dr. Alvy Ray Smith, Executive Vice President and Director. Jobs served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pixar.[7]
Initially, Pixar was a high-end computer hardware company whose core product was the Pixar Image Computer, a system primarily sold to government agencies and the medical community. One of the leading buyers of Pixar Image Computers was Disney Studios, which was using the device as part of their secretive CAPS project, using the machine and custom software to migrate the laborious Ink and Paint part of the 2-D animation process to a more automated and thus efficient method. The Image Computer never sold well.In a bid to drive sales of the system, Pixar employee John Lasseter—who had long been creating short demonstration animations, such as Luxo Jr., to show off the device's capabilities—premiered his creations at SIGGRAPH, the computer graphics industry's largest convention, to great fanfare.
As poor sales of Pixar's computers threatened to put the company out of business, Lasseter's animation department began producing computer-animated commercials for outside companies. Early successes included campaigns for Tropicana, Listerine, and LifeSavers.During this period, Pixar continued its relationship with Walt Disney Feature Animation, a studio whose corporate parent would ultimately become its most important partner. In 1991, after substantial layoffs in the company's computer department, Pixar made a $26 million deal with Disney to produce three computer-animated feature films, the first of which was Toy Story. Despite this, the company was costing Jobs so much money that he considered selling it. Only after confirming that Disney would distribute Toy Story for the 1995 holiday season did he decide to give it another chance. The film went on to gross more than $350 million worldwide.
Disney
Pixar and Disney had disagreements after the production of Toy Story 2. Originally intended as a straight-to-video release (and thus not part of Pixar's three-picture deal), the film was eventually upgraded to a theatrical release during production. Pixar demanded that the film then be counted toward the three-picture agreement, but Disney refused.Pixar's first five feature films have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion, equivalent to the highest per-film average gross in the industry. Though profitable for both, Pixar later complained that the arrangement was not equitable. Pixar was responsible for creation and production, while Disney handled marketing and distribution. Profits and production costs were split 50-50, but Disney exclusively owned all story and sequel rights and also collected a distribution fee. The lack of story and sequel rights was perhaps the most onerous aspect to Pixar and set the stage for a contentious relationship.
The two companies attempted to reach a new agreement in early 2004. The new deal would be only for distribution, as Pixar intended to control production and own the resulting film properties themselves. The company also wanted to finance their films on their own and collect 100 percent of the profits, paying Disney only the 10 to 15 percent distribution fee.More importantly, as part of any distribution agreement with Disney, Pixar demanded control over films already in production under their old agreement, including The Incredibles and Cars. Disney considered these conditions unacceptable, but Pixar would not concede.
Disagreements between Steve Jobs and then Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner made the negotiations more difficult than they otherwise might have been. They broke down completely in mid-2004, with Jobs declaring that Pixar was actively seeking partners other than Disney.Pixar did not enter negotiations with other distributors. After a lengthy hiatus, negotiations between the two companies resumed following the departure of Eisner from Disney in September 2005. In preparation for potential fallout between Pixar and Disney, Jobs announced in late 2004 that Pixar would no longer release movies at the Disney-dictated November time frame, but during the more lucrative early summer months. This would also allow Pixar to release DVDs for their major releases during the Christmas shopping season. An added benefit of delaying Cars was to extend the time frame remaining on the Pixar-Disney contract to see how things would play out between the two companies.
Pending the Disney acquisition of Pixar, the two companies created a distribution deal for the intended 2007 release of Ratatouille, in case the acquisition fell through, to ensure that this one film would still be released through Disney's distribution channels. (In contrast to the earlier Disney/Pixar deal Ratatouille was to remain a Pixar property and Disney would have received only a distribution fee.) The completion of Disney's Pixar acquisition, however, nullified this distribution arrangementType | Private (Subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company) |

Acquisition by Disney
Disney announced on January 24, 2006 that it had agreed to buy Pixar for approximately $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal. Following Pixar shareholder approval, the acquisition was completed May 5, 2006. The transaction catapulted Steve Jobs, who was the majority shareholder of Pixar with 50.1%, to Disney's largest individual shareholder with 7% and a new seat on its board of directors. Jobs' new Disney holdings exceed holdings belonging to ex-CEO Michael Eisner, the previous top shareholder, who still held 1.7%; and Disney Director Emeritus Roy E. Disney, who held almost 1% of the corporation's shares.
As part of the deal, Pixar co-founder John Lasseter, by then Executive Vice President, became Chief Creative Officer (reporting to President and CEO Robert Iger and consulting with Disney Director Roy Disney) of both Pixar and the Walt Disney Animation Studios, as well as the Principal Creative Adviser at Walt Disney Imagineering, which designs and builds the company's theme parks. Catmull retained his position as President of Pixar, while also becoming President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, reporting to Bob Iger and Dick Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studio Entertainment. Steve Jobs' position as Pixar's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer was also removed, and instead he took a place on the Disney board of directors.
Lasseter and Catmull's oversight of both the Disney and Pixar studios did not mean that the two studios were merging, however. In fact, additional conditions were laid out as part of the deal to ensure that Pixar remained a separate entity, a concern that analysts had had about the Disney deal. Some of those conditions were that Pixar HR policies would remain intact, including the lack of employment contracts. Also, the Pixar name was guaranteed to continue, and the studio would remain in its current Emeryville, California location with the "Pixar" sign. Finally, branding of films made post-merger would be "Disney•Pixar" (beginning with Cars).
Jim Morris, producer of WALL-E, has been named general manager of Pixar. In this new position, Morris is in charge of the day-to-day running of the studio facilities and products.
Honey & Clover
Outline
The first fourteen chapters of the manga were serialized in Shueisha's CUTiEcomic magazine from June 2000 to July 2001, and was serialized in Young YOU thereafter. With the demise of Young YOU in 2005, the series moved to the magazine Chorus, where it has formally ended its serialization, running until July 2006 with chapter 64.
In 2003, it won the 27th Kodansha Manga Award.
The series was adapted into an anime series by J.C. STAFF, first premiering between April to September 2005 across Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. A second and final season, Honey and Clover II, premiered from June 2006. The series was also adapted into a live action movie, which was released across theaters on July 22 2006.
The title of the series, Hachimitsu to Kurōbā, stems from Chika Umino's two favorite albums: Hachimitsu by SPITZ and Clover by Suga Shikao, due to which Spitz and Suga Shikao's songs are featured prominently in the anime.
The story takes place in a fictional art college that is based on Musashino Art University, Kodaira city, in which SPITZ vocalist Masamune Kusano was also once a student.
Overview
Yūta Takemoto, Takumi Mayama and Shinobu Morita are three young men who live in the same apartment complex and are students at an art college in Tokyo.
One day, one of the art professors, Shūji Hanamoto, introduces his cousin's daughter, Hagumi Hanamoto, who has come to live with him and is a first year at the art school. Upon introduction, Takemoto and Morita fall in love with her. Morita expresses his love for Hagu in ways that scare her, especially calling Hagu 'mousey' and constantly photographing her, while Takemoto hides his feelings and tries to be a friend to Hagu. Hagu herself, though initially timid and afraid of company, gradually warms up to the three.
The group also includes another female: Ayumi Yamada. She is a master of pottery, and is well known by her name "Tetsujin" (Iron Lady). When not at school or hanging out with friends from the college, she helps her family run the liquor store. She is very popular with all the guys, whether they are from the shopping district or the other male pottery students, but Mayama is the only man she is in love with.
Unfortunately, although Mayama considers Yamada a friend, he doesn't return Yamada's love and is busy chasing an older woman, Rika Harada. Rika runs an art business which she used to run with her husband, Harada before he died in a car accident which also left Rika disabled. Rika Harada and Shūji were very close friends and roommates in college. Mayama is sent by Shūji to help Rika, who has a hard time taking care of herself and running her business.
The story follows these five characters in their love triangles, graduating from college, finding jobs, and learning more about themselves.

Studio Ghibli - The Japanese animation film
The company's logo features the character Totoro from Hayao Miyazaki's film My Neighbor Totoro.
Several anime features created by Studio Ghibli have won the Animage Anime Grand Prix award including Laputa: Castle in the Sky in 1986, My Neighbor Totoro in 1988, and Kiki's Delivery Service in 1989. In 2002, Spirited Away won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award.
Name
The name Ghibli derives from the nickname the Italians used for their Saharan scouting planes in the Second World War (and later for the AMX International AMX and Maserati Ghibli), which is derived from the Libyan word for hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert (also known as sirocco).
Though the Italian word is pronounced with a hard /ɡ/, the Japanese pronunciation of the studio's name is with a soft g, [dʑíbɯɽi] . The theory behind the name was that the studio was blowing a new wind into the Japanese anime industry.
History
Founded in 1985, the studio is headed by the acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki along with his faithful companion Isao Takahata, as well as the studio's executive managing director and long-time producer Toshio Suzuki. Its origins date back to 1984, with the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which was popularized as a serialized manga in a publication of Tokuma Shoten's Animage magazine after the original screenplay was rejected. The film was eventually produced by Topcraft and the film's success spurred the formation of Ghibli. Much of Ghibli's works are distributed in Japan by the noted film distributor Toho. Tokuma is the parent company of Studio Ghibli, and it has provided the Walt Disney Company with the video rights to all of Ghibli's output that did not have previous international distribution, including the global, non-Japan distribution rights to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Miyazaki's film, Howl's Moving Castle, was based on a book by British author Diana Wynne Jones, published in several countries including Canada and the United States. Composer Joe Hisaishi has provided the soundtrack for all of Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films.
The most famous and lauded film from the studio that was not directed by Miyazaki is Grave of the Fireflies, directed by Isao Takahata, a film focusing on the lives of two war orphans towards the end of the Second World War in Japan.
Over the years, there has been a close relationship between Studio Ghibli and the magazine Animage, which regularly runs exclusive articles about the studio and its members in a section titled "Ghibli Notes." Artwork from Ghibli's films and other works frequently graces the cover of the magazine.
The company is well-known for its strict "no-edits" policy in licensing their films abroad. This was a result of the dubbing of Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind when the film was released in the United States as Warriors of the Wind. The film was heavily edited and americanized, with significant portions cut and the plot rewritten. The "no cuts" policy was highlighted when Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein suggested editing Princess Mononoke to make it more marketable. In response, a Studio Ghibli producer sent an authentic katana with a simple message: "No cuts".
Miyazaki's latest film, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, was released in Japan on July 19, 2008.
On February 1, 2008, Toshio Suzuki stepped down from the position of Studio Ghibli president which he held since 2005, and Koji Hoshino (former president of Walt Disney Japan) took over. Suzuki said he wanted to improve films with his own hands as a producer, rather than demanding this from his employees. He has revealed that Takahata and Goro Miyazaki (director of Tales from Earthsea and Hayao's son) are developing projects for release after Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo. Suzuki decided to hand over the presidency to Hoshino because Hoshino has helped Studio Ghibli sell its videos since 1996, as well as helped to release the Princess Mononoke film in the United States.
